Forum - Generating free publicity

Generating free publicity

Paul Green’s blog post, “14 ways to gain free publicity”, has been really popular on the Start Up Donut blog this week.

What’s been the best bit of free publicity that your business has had? Do you have any advice for other businesses or any tips to add to Paul's list?

Best piece of publicity I ever had and managed to get was from a couple of recent clients who were fairly well connected within the local area and how did I get it? Simply just doing good work - thats it.

I think the 14 ways described in the article is certainly worth reading through but just as long as you are doing good work and not trying to cheat your client/customers out of anything then word of mouth will be your best publicity.

The best bit of free publicity i've had has been through a high-profile client i've had. He is well known within the media in his line of work, and after completing his website, he kindly (and genuinely) praised me in front of the media-bods.

This led to further work, and for his kindness, i decided to upgrade his services with me for free.

Hey, That is a very nice thing to appraise someone on his work. It encourages the spirit of working of an employee. I am glad that you shared this feeling with us.

Not wanting to appear to be simply "jumping on the band wagon", but I genuinely rate Twitter as a tool for free publicity for your business. I have found I have increased traffic to my website through my Twitter following, which I have increased by regularly "tweeting" and linking to other interesting Twitter users, such as @startupdonut! I think success through this medium can be found by using it to create a brand image, giving your business a personality that is endearing whilst sharing useful information that shows you know about your business and the sector it is in, and that you have your finger on the pulse when it comes to developments in your area.
