How can we be more green at work?

As green issues become more and more important in the nation's mindset, how can we be more green in our office?

Share your tips and advice here.

My tip would be to spend a little money putting plants in your office - there are so many benefits including increased productivity, efficiency, reduced stress, reduced illness, happier employees and reduced toxins in the air. This can also save the business money in employee absences whilst giving a visual representation to customers that the business is green. You can see more about this on http://efig.eu.com/benefits-of-plants

I look forward to hearing your tips.

I added some thing to my blog today on this topic:

I'll repeat it here ....

There seems to be a lot of talk about green businesses recently with Nick Clegg announcing the launch of a low carbon business support programme.

So are you doing your bit for the environment?

How about this very simple solution for very short business trips e.g. to the bank, post office or even to a local client …

Claim the green mile.

What does this mean?

Well for every business mile travelled by bicycle you can claim 20p.

The 20p / mile bicycle allowance can be claimed as an expense in exactly the same way as a 40p / mile car allowance.

Reducing the use of cars for business mileage not only makes environmental sense it makes businesses sense too.

Congestion around the city centre is horrendous for car users and then there is the problem of parking. By using a cycle for shorter journeys businesses can save time and money. It costs a lot less to keep a bicycle on the road than a car and 20p a mile is a very generous amount.

The environment will benefit by reduced carbon emissions and employees will be more productive, fitter and healthier too as numerous research studies on exercise have shown.

So time to get my bicycle out of the sheet I think – how about you?

The rise of the internet has given us all the opportunity to be more green by opening up the possibility of working from home and thus reducing travel and therefore our carbon footprints.

This also applies to meetings - no longer do we have to jump on a train to meet with people. Instead, we can use webinars, webcams, live chat or email to discuss things, with programmes such as Basecamp and Unfuddle providing great online project management systems.
