Forum - Naming a business

Naming a business

Hi,

I am looking at setting up my own marketing business based around collaborative marketing and connecting small businesses to achieve marketing and business goals together.
I have a lot of contacts and connections within the arts and tourism/leisure industries which is turning out to he a huge asset and what a lot of businesses approach me for.

I have been trying to come up with a business name but fear I am going round in circles and not getting anywhere. As far as I can see, I can go for something incorporating part of my name, something connected with marketing or the relationship/connection angle or something a little off the wall which will be rememberable and that I can build into my brand values. How do you know which is the best way to go?

I have come up with lots of names and ideas, but a lot of them already exsist as a marketing business!

Am looking for any hints/tips or ideas about name generation that will hopefully help me to come up with a name.

Many thanks
J

When we are helping clients with branding & naming we find some good results by combining two semi-related words, or alternative words for your suggestions. E.g. MarketBridge - I have not checked if this is available ;-) This approach has become a bit too web 2.0 but it does produce some effective results.

Also remember to check domain names, twitter, trademarks etc. There is nothing worse than finding a name and then realising you cant have it!

Thank you Mischievous Media! There were so many names that I liked and really suited me and the business concept - but they were already taken (which I took to show that I was on the right lines!)
I have actually gone with The Marketing Collective - just now waiting for my branding visuals to come through. Very exciting.

I like the idea of using a word which is related to but not directly descriptive - like the things you were working on Jo of Paper Chains, Daisy Chains etc etc.

After all, Google and Amazon don't relate directly to what they do. I think this kind of name really stands out and can communicate the personality behind the brand.

Acronym's are a good way to start as well (note iMP...). When I started iMP, the name happened organically. I thought "what or who are we?"... we're 'independent' and we provide 'marketing' and 'promotion'... iMP. It helped that the 'imp' motif supported the acronym visually as well. Don't try and force it - the business name should reflect what you do and be simple.

Hi,

market linking
market link

Play on the words to set you aside and build as a brand Markit Connect

There are too many B2B names out there so you need something different, too out there will cost you more to get the name recognised.

A good name plus URL availability is always hard.

Thanks for all your comments.

Jay - I have a moodboard of what I think the business will achieve and how but will have a go at doing it from the clients point of view after using the service - I might get some new words. I don't think I expected it to take so long to come up with a name!

Anon - I like Repartee!

Joyras - I have been trying to think of things that link and connect: Daisy chains, paper chains, patchwork, jigsaw but nothing is jumping out at me. Will keep going though!
Bagaddict - that is good advice on the 3 syllables although if I want marketing in the title then that is them gone! It is certainly taking the time going through urls! A good exercise though.

Hi J

I run a brand image design and consultancy service and when we get do design a brand image or a re-brand the first thing we do is get a moodboard and and keywords.

With the keywords we write any word relating to your business but more importantly words that encompasses what your potential targetmarket expect from you how they recognise you and how they will FEEL after using your service.

You will see that this way some words keep coming back words that work well. the best names are sometimes the hardest to find as you have to take so many things into account.

whether you use your name, keywords, or something left field the most important thing is that your target market can relate to this.

I am more then happy to speak to you if you would like more information.

Take care

Jay

Having spent a good 4 weeks going round in circles myself, I found the more I thought about it the harder it was. And then It is also about getting the domain name too! Keep it simple, no more than 3 syllables and .co.uk and .com available without hyphens or having to change the name.
What are your keywords? A domain name with keywords in should rank better in google. May not be a 'sexy' name but neither is Tesco!
Good luck

I have no experience in practice but I'd go for a rhyming couplet (or close enough) or play on words to get the memorable factor.
Springing straight to mind are:
High Jinx and Business Links
The Links Minx
Miss Cooper's Introducers
Repartee - I kind of like this one. You Represent Arty types and hopefully bring them together for some clever conversation.

I am thinking of a play on the key words ie marketing/ connection
even marketing connections works quite well and says what I think your business is about. So to the point and simple to understand and remember I think
market connect
business connects,
biz connects - not so keen on slang though personally
