We use PayPal to accept payments for our site. We also recommend our clients use it, especially at first as they grow their business. It's a cheap and easy way to accept online payments when selling online through eCommerce stores.
Is Paypal secure? I have heard so many stories of people saying they were not happy with Paypal or they were receiving huge amounts of spam emails shortly after using Paypal.
We have a few online stores and at first we just used paypal but we found that we were loosing some orders because not everyone has a paypal account and even though you can pay without a paypal account people do not understand that when they are redirected to the paypal website. So now we use Paypal payments pro which allows credit / debit cards and is all managed on your own website and it seems to be working well.
Hello Jade, we have built MANY online eCommerce systems for large and small clients - we can help you and I would be happy to chat on the phone to discuss your options and offer advice - pls email your number to me on info@webdesignhaus.co.uk - Thanks.
We work with a number of start up businesses on a daily basis and can recommend the following payment providers.
Paypal, SagePay and World pay all equally easy to use. I suppose it depends on your website and which is easier to integrate. Are you building it yourself or is an agency doing it for you?
As a new business there are a few questions you need to ask yourself:
Firstly, are you looking to take payments online or by mail / telephone?
If you want to accept payments on your website, then do you already have an internet merchant account? If not, you will need one as well as a payment gateway.
In terms of shopping carts it all depends on what product you are selling as well as your budget and technical expertise
(open source carts vs. software as a service).
The simplest, cheapest and easiest is paypal merchant account. I have no idea what the fees are but at least you can take cash over the web and the integration into your website is easy and you don't have to worry about PCI compliance or anything else.
Then once you grow and start to do more volume you can migrate to a Barclays or RBS online merchant account.
I also recommend you PayPal - users are familiar with the system and so they feel more secure using it.

Hi Jade
I was wondering if you'd made any decisions about payment providers? Who did you decide to go with?
