Ok im not the best at forms etc and paperwork,im tidy and organised, but struggle at times. Why is nothing in the way of VAT explained straightforward?(again this may be me!) Here's my story in simple bullet points.
Went through VAT threshold in 17th JAN 2012
Tried three weeks to personally speak or see my Accountant and failed!!! I managed to speak to his asisstant who told me to invoice everything up by the end of Feb,as i got advised you get 30 days so I would be vat registered from the 1st March 2012,my accountants were supposed to have filled out a form for me and just have sent it to me to sign.......22nd of March arrived and no form arrived so I went online and done it my self.
I have now had my form through from the VAT with my registration Number and My Effective Date which is indicated as the 1st of Feb,which as far as im concerned is wrong? Maybee this was a messup on my behalf filling out the form-i do remember getting confused with date of expectation etc
Ive then read on the internet varying things on charging VAT, The way I understand if my Effective date was the 1st of March, then I start charging for VAT from the 1st March.
I just wondered what the best thing is to do?
It certainly feels sometimes as if the whole tax system is set up to confuse us. Have a look at the Tax Donut, particularly our VAT section, for some tips and useful links: http://www.taxdonut.co.uk/tax/vat.

Thank you for your link it was very helpful,HMRC have now sorted the problem for me and were very helpful, and my effective date has now been ammended.
The best thing to do is speak directly to HMC&E and discuss, if there has been an error in completing the form then they should be able to correct their information.
Hi There, thanks for your reply.I have indeed spoken to the HMC&E this morning, the lady proceeded to telll me on the phone that i could write of and send an explanation and reasoning behind why i think the date should have been the first of March, but the chances are she thought it would remain unchanged. This means that I crossed the threshold on the 17th Jan 2012 ,and they are registering me from the 1st Feb! which goes against everything ive read and understood,AND more worryingly what my accountant told me!
