North West small firms offered free R&D

North West-based small firms planning environmentally-focused research and development (R&D) projects are being invited by Lancaster University to apply for free graduate help.

Now in its sixth year, the scheme works by placing suitably qualified graduates with local businesses in the process of developing new ideas or technology.

In return for offering a five week work placement or a longer, three to six month position, the business will receive the MSc or BSc student’s expertise and a bespoke written report on the research findings at the end of the project.

Previous examples of work undertaken by students include a feasibility study on the potential of glass recycling for a waste management firm, and a review of renewable energy options for a hotel and timeshare complex.

Work is provided free of charge, although the business will be expected to cover travel expenses. Short projects are run from the beginning of November until December, while longer projects will last from Easter to August.

“The aim is to bring about real business benefits through university/industry collaboration and suitable projects will be environmentally focused, academically challenging and achievable,” said David Ainsworth, Lancaster University’s student placement manager.

To be eligible for the scheme, businesses must be based in the North West, employ fewer than 250 staff and have an annual turnover of less than £40 million. Applications are being accepted from now until late August.

To apply, business owners are required to provide information about their firm and particular project ideas, which will then be submitted to the university’s portfolio. Students make their project choice in September.
