Marketing is one of those vital factors. Even if you offer top quality products and services, if no one knows about it, your efforts will go to waste.

Should I stick to online?

Most start-ups make use of online marketing. It is fast, convenient, and accessible. It is also free in most instances - aside from the time you put in. For start-ups working within a tight budget, making use of the internet's huge potential is an enormous help - letting you reach out to thousands or even millions of people.

In a single post via Facebook, for instance, you can immediately get your message to all the people in your contacts list. If someone shares your post, this number multiplies. It's easy to understand why many businesses are drawn to this marketing model.

Building a local following

However, even if you do pursue digital marketing, don't forget more conventional forms of advertising like the use of rollup banners. As a start-up business, your immediate targets are your local audience. You want them to know what you have to offer. You can't expect the whole world to understand your business if you don't start with a strong local following.

The problem with online marketing is that it tends to reach a more general population. You can get your message in front of a lot of people, but none of them might be interested in buying your products and services.

Traditional advertising, on the other hand, will target the locals. People passing by on the street, in markets, shopping centres and schools will see the ads that you have put up. Include contact information, and before you know it, the enquiries will be flooding in.

These leads will eventually transform into actual customers. If they find the products you offer exciting, they could end up becoming loyal to your brand.

Diversify your tactics

As a start-up business owner, the most important thing to remember is to stay innovative. You are in this position in the first place because you came up with a brilliant idea that appealed to a lot of people.

You can't rest on your laurels because you thought of something great - you still need to come up with ways to get your business known. Don't expect everything to take off and soar in an instant. Keep working even harder and testing different approaches until you reach success.
