When people talk about a start-up business being in trouble, they often mean it doesn't have a complete business plan or isn't sure whether the products and services it's bringing to market have much of an audience.
However, many struggling start-ups don't suffer from obvious big issues. Instead, they're dealing with smaller tech-related niggles that, over time, metastasize into something much more serious.
While small things might not seem like a big deal, they could build up time and eventually spell doom for your business. Fortunately, the overwhelming majority of these issues cost very little to fix. Those that do will cost so little that the ROI on them could feasibly be in the hundreds of percent - so there's absolutely no reason not to get started right away.
1. A slow-loading website
While a solicitor or a florist might not necessarily worry about this sort of thing very much, start-up companies in the e-commerce sector need to be sure that they provide an excellent user experience. If your site loads slowly, then there's a good chance visitors wilt click away and end up right back on Yahoo or Google to find your competitors.
If your site is slow to load, there's a good chance that you have some non-standard code or functionality on your site that can be easily removed. Overusing video is an extremely common mistake that even the biggest firms make.
Some firms use a system like HostScore to test whether or not their sites are performant. If you've been told you have a problem with site speed, this might be a great way to go.
2. Look and feel-related issues
Colour scheme certainly isn't the single most important consideration when creating a site, but you don't want something that's absolutely awful. Make sure that anything too garish gets replaced with a more neutral colour scheme. There's a reason why monochrome design has been popular for so many years.
When things look strange, users might be turned off because they could come to the conclusion that you haven't put much work into your site - if you can’t be bothered with your website, you might not put much work into offering them service either.
If you’re using Wordpress, there are tons of really great themes out there, so there’s really no excuse for looking mediocre.
3. Overpaying for software
One of the most common mistakes small business owners make is overpaying for software and technology solutions right out of the gate. Start-ups often pay a little too much for one package, and then £5 more than they should have for another. In the end, they're paying hundreds of pounds more than they need.
Fortunately, there are free solutions for almost every problem out there now. It shouldn't be hard to find completely free or low-cost alternatives, regardless of what kind of software you need.
4. Neglecting your social profiles
Customers use social media - it’s a fact - and if you want to reach them, you need to be there too. Fill out your Google My Business profile and create a proper social media presence for yourself. It costs absolutely nothing apart from a little time and effort to set these up.
More than likely, you already have a Facebook and Twitter account. If you’re in retail, make sure to also sign up for Instagram - a huge number of consumers now check these before making a purchase.
Even if you took all of this advice, you'd probably spend less than £50, so you could more than likely do it in a single day!
