Ensure your next office move is the right one

Sometimes, you might feel that the grass looks greener on the other side with regards to your business’ location. Maybe it actually is greener, and so relocating would pave the way for continued, unhindered expansion. Still, how can you be certain?

Of course, there are many variables at play here - but, by carefully considering the following factors, you can increase the likelihood that moving into a new office will turn out to be for the best.

Are you struggling to find the right people?

The Pennsylvania-based economic development consultant Sharon K Ward cites five main reasons why businesses opt to move. One is difficulty in recruiting suitable staff, while the desire to expand into a new market is another incentive.

If your company requires qualified staff with special - especially technical - expertise, or your target customers are not abundant in your current location, the case for an office relocation strengthens.

Does your business need more room to grow?

Even the most world-conquering corporate behemoths had modest beginnings; you are probably familiar with the story of Steve Jobs making the first Apple computers in a humble garage.

Your own firm's quarters might not be quite that modest. Still, when you are endeavouring to recruit more people but lack much room for them to work on-site, moving would be a sensible option if you can't simply pour your staff into extra space already adjoining your current office.

Are you only just making ends meet?

One common argument against moving is the expense it can entail, but any expense you incur in the move itself could soon be cancelled out if your new location is more cost-effective in the long run.

Perhaps living and rental costs are simply lower in the new area - even if you simply move from a city-centre location to a suburb. Alternatively, through access to a new market, you could spur increased sales that help you to amass a higher cash flow.

Are you tempted by a higher quality of life?

Alas, low cost does not always equate to high value - and that's why you need to consider how much you could improve your quality of life simply by moving your business and yourself with it.

If your company's current town or city is blighted by high crime rates, ugly and dilapidated architecture and poor recreational and educational opportunities, this could all deter the job candidates you want from living within ready commuting distance of your office.

Do your staff have the amenities they need?
